backwards <> forwards
although last weekend’s fun at machina bristonica seems a long time ago now, i certainly had a great time and was massively inspired by what I saw. it was great too, to meet Tim from WHI Records / Secret Nuclear, who’s music I’ve been enjoying for quite some time. At some point, i should do a full write up on highlights from the weekend, but for now I will make special mention of Hinako Omori and The Transcendence Orchestra who both turned in amazing sets on Sunday, plus it was lovely to catch up again with George of Rides in the Storm and see his latest modules, which were really impressive. Regardless of the lineup next year, I’m definitely planning to go. I’m also, on the basis of Tim’s recommendation, going to figure out how I can get all the way over to Norwich for Synth East at the end of next February. Hopefully see you there.
after a nice relaxing monday to recover, my plans to get back to the day job on Tuesday were scuppered by a migraine and accompanying sickness but thankfully it cleared fast enough for me to get to Portsmouth on the evening to see great sets from Kayla Painter, Sulk Rooms and Secret Self. again, really inspiring.
each time i watch an artist live at the minute, as well as enjoying it as an experience, i’m trying to better understand my own aspirations to play live and how that might work. hampered as i am by not being a musician and a significant lack of experience in live electronics (although I’ve done the odd live thing in other contexts) there’s a big hill to climb but i feel like i am slowly but surely scratching away at the surface and carving out a small path forward though the forest of unknowns.
at the minute, all this pondering about what a live set might entail has been purely a mental exercise. i know there are a lot of problems to solve getting from the theoretical to actual live performance, but the plan is that I take advantage of the stormy weather outside (‘hurricane ashley’ no less) and start experimenting in a practical sense. I will report back how it goes.
this week’s music sketch is a drone that I cut down to a much shorter snippet. it’s funny how the reverb I’m using has it’s own distinct ‘voice’ - I need to figure out how to get away from that to provide more variety - but it’s still here for now - at least until I can find something I like more.
