pushing onwards, pushing outwards

with the first ep released into the wild and out of the way, my mind is firmly on the next release which will, all being well, be in august. i’m very keen not to end up doing the mixing as late as i did, so i am the plan is to have nailed down what will be on there by mid-june at the latest. i’ve already got a couple of things that I think will be on there in some form (although i have a feeling i’ve lost a track somewhere in the depths of the hard-drive - i remember it had a similar bass tone to dn’t_fk_w_chk and sort of burial style drums but i don’t know where it’s gone… anyway) i’m still working on a couple of new things to go on there too. the latest is definitely the longest thing i’ve done so far and eventually has a very squelchy, almost 16-bit sounding arps come in. it’s still very much in progress but i have a real feeling that i want it to cover a lot of ground and go to different places. i suspect this is in part a consequence of me listening to loads of ‘night tracks’ on R3 recently. if you haven’t heard it before, it is hosted by the amazing composer and musician hannah peel and each 90 minute show covers a really diverse range of expertly picked chilled music so you might hear anything from nick drake to zoe keating to liszt or an electronic drone piece. happily you can download it via bbc sounds so you don’t have to sit up to the wee small hours to hear it. so yeah, i think that is shifting the edges of my sonic map outwards at present.

UPDATE (some time later): yeah, i’ve definitely lost that other bass track and now i’ve found out that i’ve misplaced the project files for ‘chlorinated chicken for the soul’ too. i never really finished that track off and it was definitely one i was planning to come back to at some point, but it’s gone forever now apart from the rough version that currently lives on the music section. i’m a bit disappointed that both tracks are gone, but working on the basis that these things happen for a reason and there will be other tracks that emerge to fill the space in the universe left by the departure of these ones. onwards!
